Good morning, Fort Smith! ☀️
Mid-80s through the weekend before storms roll in Tuesday and Wednesday - perfect window to catch the last weekend before Old Fort Days Rodeo takes over Harper Stadium and Memorial Day weekend lights up Garrison Avenue.
It's a heavy week in the River Valley. A $75M F-35 training facility just broke ground at Ebbing with a billion-dollar economic shadow forming behind it. Meanwhile, 125,000 gallons of acid are still eating through our sewer pipes from a May 2 chemical rupture - and the EPA just handed cleanup back to the state. Whether you're tracking what's coming to Fort Smith or what's quietly damaging it underground, this one's worth your full attention.
What to expect in today’s newsletter:
✈️ $1B Lands at Ebbing - F-35 training center breaks ground, timeline cut from 24 to 18 months
⚠️ Acid in the Sewer - EPA exits, leaving Fort Smith taxpayers to track concrete damage to city pipes
🔧 Jobs Pipeline Opens - SkillStream launches HVAC, energy, and manufacturing career paths with local employers
🤠 Rodeo Week Hits - 93rd Old Fort Days kicks off Memorial Day with the Patriot Night Parade

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
F-35 pilot training center breaks ground at Ebbing, Army Corps targets 18-month completion
What this means: Fort Smith's Ebbing base begins a $75M construction project-4 advanced simulators, allied pilot training, and $1B+ projected economic impact for the region
Army Corps leaders broke ground May 6 on a $75M F-35 training center at Ebbing, pushing for 18-month completion to bring $1B+ economic impact.
Here's what to know:
The facility will house 4 advanced F-35 simulators and academic space for U.S. and allied pilots, including Singapore's foreign military sales program; original 24-month timeline was publicly cut to 18 months by Brig. Gen. George Walter during the May 6 ceremony
This is the first of several planned Ebbing projects-construction on a Singapore F-16 training facility is expected to begin within the year, with a walkable campus transformation planned by 2029
$75M in funding secured by Rep. Steve Womack and Sen. John Boozman; Womack projects "hundreds of millions, perhaps a billion" in long-term economic value for Fort Smith and the region
INFRASTRUCTURE
125,000-gallon acid spill threatens Fort Smith sewer system; EPA hands cleanup to state
What this means: The May 2 C&S Chemicals rupture on U.S. 271 is causing long-term concrete degradation in city drainage and sewer-remediation ongoing with no timeline set for full repairs
C&S Chemicals May 2 rupture released 125,000 gallons of acid on U.S. 271, contaminating Fort Smith drainage channels and sewer-drinking water confirmed safe.
Here's what to know:
City engineers warn the highly acidic runoff will accelerate degradation of concrete drainage channels and sanitary sewer pipes over time; pump stations, manholes, and pipes in the affected area are actively being assessed for damage
As of May 11, EPA has withdrawn oversight and transferred cleanup responsibility to the Arkansas Dept. of Environmental Quality and C&S Chemicals; runoff crossed into Oklahoma at a pH near 1-Environmental Works Inc. is overseeing remediation
Drinking water was not contaminated; residents near the creek along U.S. 271 toward Texas Road were warned by door-to-door outreach and should continue avoiding contact with the creek
