What this means: Families can register new students and kindergarteners a full month early, starting Dec. 1, before the state's new Jan. 1 school choice window opens. First chance for Fort Smith families to lock in their neighborhood school under new Act 732 law.

Fort Smith Public Schools is launching early registration Dec. 1 to give local families first access before state school choice applications open statewide Jan. 1, 2026 a major shift from previous years when new families waited until February to register.

Here's what to know:

  • Early registration begins Dec. 1 for new students and first-time kindergarteners at fortsmithschools.org/enrollment or at any FSPS school

  • State school choice window runs Jan. 1 June 1, 2026 for all transfer requests under new Act 732 law

  • Elementary students who previously applied for school choice can stay at current schools for 2026 2027 year

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Downtown Wyndham hotel listed for sale 242-room property could bring $12M-$36M

What this means: Fort Smith's landmark downtown hotel at 700 Rogers Ave. is on the market after being listed Oct. 8, with potential buyers evaluating a property connected to the Convention Center and Performing Arts Center. Sale could reshape downtown hospitality landscape.

The nine-story Wyndham Fort Smith City Center originally opened in 1986 as Embassy Suites is for sale through Atlanta-based Hodges Ward Elliott, with industry estimates placing the value between $12.1 million and $36.3 million based on its 242 rooms.

Here's what to know:

  • Hotel features 15,880 square feet of event space, directly connected to 116,800-square-foot Fort Smith Convention Center

  • Property received $10 million renovation in 2017; converted from DoubleTree to Wyndham brand in August 2021

  • Current owner Tandem Hospitality (Lexington, KY) has not disclosed asking price; hotel sits on 2.18 acres

Club Car Wash opens on Zero Street after acquiring Shorty's donating $1 washes to United Way

What this means: New car wash debuts at 2121 S Zero St with limited-time promotions and community fundraiser. All $1 MVP wash proceeds support United Way of Fort Smith programs addressing critical local needs.

Club Car Wash celebrated its Fort Smith grand opening this week at the former Shorty's Car Wash location, launching memberships at $10/month for three months and offering the first 250 customers scratch-off tickets for prizes including a $3,500 vacation package.

Here's what to know:

  • Grand opening promotion: MVP wash for $1 with all proceeds donated to United Way of Fort Smith
